Official forums are down so I'm bored :)

I've been noticing a trend that's really a little annoying at times. Don't get me wrong. I'm not losing sleep over this or super angry about this.

I just find all a little silly that's all.

What is it ?

It's people's obsession with "The best [fill in the blank] addon".

They demand to know what is the currently fashionable addon for one particular thing on their UI. Like there is only one true addon to use and death to anyone from the opposing camp for "daring" to suggest their addon is "better" to use.

Why does having "the best addon" matter ?

Are they afraid that someones going to come along and give them demerit points for "using the wrong addons and irresponsibly configuring UI" ?

That someone's going to notice them using the wrong buffs addon and call them out on it when they post their PVP video to you tube ?

That by choosing the wrong questing addon their computer's going to explode in fairy bits and they are going to break out in boils ?

That somewhere , somehow there's going to be masses of kittens dying because they picked the wrong unit frames addon ?

IMHO They seem to ignore one simple fact :

At the end of the day the only person it all matters to is the person who's sitting at the computer playing with that addon.

You could argue long after the cows come home about how heavenly this addon is written using celestial dust by gods , carressed & optimized by hand by beautiful boxen goddess and how that other addon is the scum of the earth etc etc.

It's not going to matter at all if it doesn't fulfill a users requirements. If they can't fit it into their play style they're not going to use it. They'll try it out for a bit then reject it.

So I'm sorry but I don't believe there is one single best addon in any one category. All addons in a particular category has something to offer a player. Something unique that only means something to the player that installs it.

The "best" doesn't really mean anything at all. A player needs to be comfortable using it for them to install it. They're not going to go through the effort of updating if they didn't feel it was worth their while / liked the author's work.

This is why there is so many addons out there that effectively do the same thing but with different boxes laid out on the screen - theres an addon out there for everyone and no there is no "best [fill in the blank] addon" that trumps other addons in that catergory.

Even the "Donalds"(1) of the world

(1) Donald of Wears new boots on his head Dark Legacy fame.

I run on a 30" Apple Cinema HD monitor with a resolution of 2560x1600. Is there something online that can help me figure out an ideal scale? I feel like some UI's come out being SUPER big and feel as if I am wearing magnify glasses.

I need for carbonite to show me my quest on the main world map as well as the quest of my party members if I do not have the same quest in order for me ot better track and help them to locations and quest.

So far i have fiddled with about everything I can see, watched the demo and yes, even (GASP) as a male read the instructins, but no matter what I try have not been able to get a directional arrow to show on main screen pointing to nearest quest, NOR importantly for it to show me a single quest marked on the main world map. I have problems with colors and find it difficult to look at the Carb map at times so stay with the WOW map is this the problem?

How do I fix this issue please?

Is it possible to hide/show or change the alpha of action buttons? Perhaps it requires hooking a secure function?

I started writing a simple addon to trigger one of the above on a button when "ACTIONBAR_SLOT_CHANGED" is fired, but trying to use methods Hide(), IsShown(), IsVisible(), GetAlpha(), etc., returns an error. Come to think of it, can action buttons be modified at all without modifying the entire bar? I notice that no major action bar addons have features to change individual buttons, short of making a new bar to house them.

For the record, I was getting the number of the button based on arg1 of the event "ACTIONBAR_SLOT_CHANGED" and concatenating it to what would be its respective frame name by default. Using the following in-game would work, which left me perplexed:

Code:

/run ActionButton1:Hide()
